Universities today are facing an identity crisis. For generations the message has been clear. A college degree is a ticket to the middle class. But as the Wall Street Journal recently reported, “you have a higher chance of being unemployed these days if you go to college.” So what is the purpose of the university today – and what is its future? As residents of a college town, we owe it to ourselves to think seriously about the question.
